History of using beeswax
Lighting the darkness must have been one of mankind’s earliest pursuits. The technology of hunter gatherers included portable fire in the form of smouldering moss; fire was something that they were very good at.
Honey would be a wonderful prize and it could not have escaped their notice that beeswax had many uses including the treating of ropes that were essential for packing up and following the heard. Animal derived tallow lamps would be common place and for special events wrapping a handful of beeswax round some cord and setting fire to it would have been a treat.
Examples of dipped beeswax candles were found in a 7th century tomb in Germany but the use of beeswax has been hinted at as far back as old kingdom Egypt. The Romans used beeswax candles for light and worship but they would have been a luxury item.
South of the Pyrenees, the Alps and the Caucuses olive oil lamps were common place but further north tallow - or to demonstrate wealth and Christian worship; orthodox and Roman churches - beeswax with its sweet smell and non-animal fat derived would have been preferred.
Honey bees secrete wax to build cells for their young to be raised in and capped cells for storing pollen and honey.
When the honey is harvested the combs remain as a mixture of wax and hive debris. This can be filtered and refined depending on the final use.
Much of the wax is filtered and made into frames moulded as a honeycomb to return to hives which gives the bees a head start next season.
For candle making the wax is usually filtered and settled leaving a honey coloured wax. Using the energy derived from sunlight via bees and not blended with hydrocarbon paraffin wax, it burns with a reddish flame for longer and with slight smell of aromatic honey.
Candles from 'naturally, bees' are made with pure beeswax blended from hives worldwide. Bees feeding on a diverse flora give consistently excellent quality. The many uses of beeswax give added value to bee keeping.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q - What is so special about your beeswax?
A - It is pure and natural. We use 100% guaranteed pure beeswax with nothing added.
Q - Why don't you add perfume or essential oils?
A - Beeswax smells of gently warmed honeycomb and by keeping it free from all additives we can ensure our product is pure.
Q - Why are your candles expensive?
A - Every candle is hand-made using 100% pure beeswax.
Q - Why are your candles cheap?
A - We do our best to keep our prices down by maintaining our cottage industry, with no out-sourcing and using, where possible, recycled materials.
Q - Why do the colours vary?
A - The colour varies slightly because it is a natural product and depends on the flowers that the bees visit gathering nectar.
Q - What is the powdery-stuff that appears?
A - This is called 'bloom'; a naturally occurring substance that indicates purity. It has no affect on the candle's burning.
Q - What type of wicks do you use?
A - After much testing we discovered that the best wicks are hemp for our dipped and cotton for poured.
Q - Can you make different sizes?
A - Because our candles are hand-made we are not restrained to stick to a particular size. If you wish to discuss a bespoke order please get in touch.
